Water Vs. Sports Drinks

July 28th, 2008 · 2 Comments

While I was working out a question occurred to me should I be rehydrating with water or a sports drink, such as gatorade or powerade? I googled this question and found out that the water was actually better for me during shorter workouts. While if I was running or doing other exercise for over 3 hours I should try a sports drink. Water is superior to a sports drink because if you are only exercising for a short time span they provide you with nothing different than water besides calories. However if you exercise for a long time you are losing electorytes and a sports drink will help you refuel faster.

If you aren’t sure which sports drink is best for you or don’t want to drink one with artificial ingredients try this homemade recipe for a healthier sports drink.

  • ½ cup orange juice
  • 9 Tbsp sugar
  • 3/8 tsp salt
  • Water to 2 liters

Is that a typo, or is *9 tablespoons* of sugar correct? That seems like an awful lot.

Well actually 9 tablespoons for this recipe is correct, this recipe is actually just a substitute if you dont want gatorade, but it actually very much the same as gatorade. To low potassium you actually can have 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp light salt, which would reduce the potassium by up to 50%.

here is also another recipe if you want to have a healthier sports drink.

      -4 tablespoons sugar
      -1/4 teaspoon salt
      -1/4 cup boiling water
-1/4 cup orange juice (not concentrate) or 2 tablespoons lemon juice
      -3-3/4 cups cold water
—–1. In the bottom of a pitcher, dissolve the sugar and salt in the hot water.
——2. Add the juice and the remaining water; chill.

      Hope this helps.
